Professional Photo on your LinkedIn Profile can land you better jobs
In today’s age of online hiring and professional networking, LinkedIn is top-ranked when it comes to landing higher-paying jobs.
Business Insider reports that a study conducted by The Ladders, an eye tracking heatmap shows that recruiters spend 19% of the total time they spend on your LinkedIn profile looking at your picture. Then, your current job position and education are glanced at, but not so much time is spent on your skills, or older work experiences.
This showcases the importance of having a LinkedIn profile photo. Miriam Salpeter (U.S. News & World Report) says that not having a photo on your LinkedIn profile will make others assume that you’re either “really ugly” or “don’t know how to upload a picture.”
According to LinkedIn Career Expert Nicole Williams, “One of the biggest mistakes I see is no photo. You’re seven times more likely to have your profile viewed if you have one. Like a house that’s on sale, the assumption is that if there’s no photo, something’s wrong.”
Also important is the “Remember Me” factor. “If you leave a networking event with a handful of business cards, intending to follow up on LinkedIn, it’s much harder for you to remember who’s who without pictures. A missing photo can easily lead to missed connections.” states Personal Finance writer Libby Kane of Forbes.com.
It is recommended that people have an image of their profiles if they’re a professional. At the same time, putting up the wrong picture can hurt your chances. The LinkedIn photo is meant to show you at your professional – not personal – best. Most people make the mistake of selecting their most flattering photo and not paying attention to details that recruiters might catch like a distraction in the background, another person in the photo cut off, unprofessional attire or pose. With the help of an experienced photographer such as Suvi Naga taking your headshots, you’ll be able get the best of the both worlds, flattering photographs shot with professionalism in mind.
